Standards
Ahead of the curve
To some, the mounting kit is considered trivial. An afterthought. A commodity. This approach has led to poorly designed kits, which are a primary cause of failure. To us, an engineered mounting kit is the unsung hero of the entire assembly.
In recent years, our industry has taken formal steps to ensure safety, quality, consistency, and increased uptime by considering the complete valve automation assembly including the mounting kit. Specifications and requirements regarding valve and actuator designs and their usage in the field have been on the books for years, but there hadn’t been any formal standards on mounting kits until recent years. We base our engineering and design on these standards, and we actively contribute to their evolution by participating in several industry subcommittees as invited experts.
While some in our industry still rely on past designs and practices because “it hasn’t failed yet (that we know of)” or the old partner to mediocrity “this is the way we’ve always done it,” we are constantly challenging ourselves to be open to new developments, innovations, and data from the field to exceed the demands our products are assigned.
The most common industry standards we use while engineering mounting kits include:
- MSS SP-101 Part-Turn Valve Actuator Attachment – FA flange and driving component dimensions and performance characteristics
- ISO 5211 – Industrial valves – Part-turn actuator attachment
- EN 15081 – Industrial valves – Mounting kits for part-turn valve and actuator attachment
- ISO 12490 – Petroleum and natural gas industries – Mechanical integrity and sizing of actuators and mounting kits for pipeline valves
- API 6DX – Standard for actuators and mounting kits for valves
- WIB Recommended Practice S2812-X-19
The above standards contain dedicated sections specifically regarding the mechanical integrity and engineering aspects of mounting kit components.
